About CFC

Couples for Christ (abbreviated as CFC), is an international Catholic lay ecclesial movement whose goal is to renew and strengthen Christian family life and values. CFC is one of 122 International Associations of the Faithful, affiliated with and officially recognized by the Pontifical Council for the Laity.

Our Story

CFC traces its origin to Manila, Philippines. It was established in 1981 by the charismatic community Ang Ligaya ng Panginoon (LNP) (Filipino for “Joy of the Lord”) as its outreach to evangelize married couples. Through the years, Couples for Christ has blossomed worldwide. It is now present in all 81 Philippine provinces and dioceses and has been brought to 163 countries.

CFC is is led by an International Council, which operates in the Philippines under the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines.

From the introduction of CFC by Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle in the III Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops—The Pastoral Challenges of the Family in the Context of Evangelization held on October 5-19, 2014 in Vatican

The Family Ministries

CFC started with renewal of married couples, but by 1993, eventually evolved with programs for renewal of the entire family. Today, CFC continues to be a major force in the renewal of Christian family life and the evangelization of nations.

Vatican Recognition

In the year 2000,

Vatican recognized Couples for Christ as a private international association of the faithful and approved CFC’s amended statutes. The recognition was ad experementum, or an experimental basis for five years, at the end of which the Vatican would once again evaluate CFC and decide if the recognition ought to be permanent.

On April 25, 2005, the Pontifical Council of the Laity, after due evaluation, granted Couples for Christ permanent and definitive recognition as a private international association of the faithful.

Program

Family is a Gift

The world is bombarded with daily messages and challenges that erode the foundation of the family. CFC is called and set apart by the Lord to be Spirit-filled families, helping to renew the world through promoting family values to protect and support the family.

We believe that it is the family that builds a community, and it takes a community to raise a family. Through FIG, CFC seeks to share CFC’s giftedness of family life renewal to parishes, dioceses, archdioceses, schools, other institutions, and to the world—to help guide and evangelize families of today.

Living Our Faith

Core Values

CFC’s mission extends beyond formation into concrete works of love and service:

Pro-God

We believe in marriage as an indissoluble institution as taught by our Lord Jesus Christ (Mt. 19:6); and that God created marriage primarily for love between man and woman, and for the procreation and proper rearing of children.

Pro-Family

We believe that Christian family renewal can best be achieved by inviting Jesus to be the Lord of our homes, by allowing the power of the Holy Spirit to lead our family lives, and through the full use of all spiritual gifts at our disposal.

Pro-Life

We believe that God created man and wife with equal personal worth and dignity; and that God ordained order in the family with roles that best express their complementarity. We believe in the inalienable and irreplaceable right and responsibility of parents to educated their children; and that children need to be educated in essential human and Christian values for them to become responsible and mature members of society.

Pro-Poor

We believe that the family, in practicing the gospel message, shares in the life and mission of the Church—through prayers, evangelization and service to others, especially to the poor.

Pro -Environment

We believe that our vocation to be protectors of God's creation, encompassing all life and the earth itself, is essential for living a virtuous life and ensuring a legacy of care for our common home for future generations.
